2010 Pantone Color of the Year: TURQUOISE!

December 8, 2009

We interrupt your regularly scheduled dose of turquoise to bring you this newsbreak: Pantone Unveils Color of the Year for 2010: PANTONE 15-5519 Turquoise. How utterly exciting is that?!

From their most-interesting press release found here:

CARLSTADT, N.J., Dec. 8, 2009 –Pantone LLC, an X-Rite company (NASDAQ: XRIT), and the global authority on color and provider of professional color standards for the design industries, today announced PANTONE® 15-5519 Turquoise, an inviting, luminous hue, as the color of the year for 2010. Combining the serene qualities of blue and the invigorating aspects of green, Turquoise evokes thoughts of soothing, tropical waters and a languorous, effective escape from the everyday troubles of the world, while at the same time restoring our sense of wellbeing.

“In many cultures, Turquoise occupies a very special position in the world of color,” explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. “It is believed to be a protective talisman, a color of deep compassion and healing, and a color of faith and truth, inspired by water and sky. Through years of color word-association studies, we also find that Turquoise represents an escape to many – taking them to a tropical paradise that is pleasant and inviting, even if only a fantasy.”

Whether envisioned as a tranquil ocean surrounding a tropical island or a protective stone warding off evil spirits, Turquoise is a color that most people respond to positively. It is universally flattering, has appeal for men and women, and translates easily to fashion and interiors. With both warm and cool undertones, Turquoise pairs nicely with any other color in the spectrum. Turquoise adds a splash of excitement to neutrals and browns, complements reds and pinks, creates a classic maritime look with deep blues, livens up all other greens, and is especially trend-setting with yellow-greens. The last part in bold was my favorite! 😉

What a great day (ahem…year!) for turquoise!

best! news! ever!! more beautiful turquoisey stuff showing up in stores!! or … wait … could be worst! news! ever!! we'll start seeing so much of it that it will no longer be gorgeous and our favorite-best (in the words of my four-year-old) because it will be pedestrian and overused. oh, the conundrum.

Why don't you invite your readers to send in photos of turquoise used in their homes and do a post on it 🙂

I agree with Visual Vamp, I would love to see that! I have a hard time choosing the right paint color. Sometimes I have to repaint 2 or 3 times to get it "just right". So if anyone remembers the name and brand of the color in their rooms… It would be an enormous help to me!!!

This made me so happy when I saw it! I've been ahead of the curve for years now! I am a part-time interior designer, and I guess I don't have to worry about "abusing" turquoise in other peoples' spaces next year. 🙂

Love this blog and all the inspiration in it.

Pantone read my mind! been increasingly drawn to this range of bluegreen (my office is robin's egg, overlooking the Bosphorus, one of many Turkish waterways which gave their name to the color turquoise)…

plus the Topkapi palace harem photo i use on my websites is also turquoise themed….

    thrilled…

I suppose that 2010 is going to be a very happy year for you, being a turquoise-lover:)
This is one of may favorite color schemes, too, but I am a little afraid that it will be overused so much that people will become bored.

I am so living turquoise at the moment, all because of your blog… and the fact that it is an amazing, vibrant colour. I am delighted with Pantone's choice which means we are going to see a whole lot more of it in 2010.

We have been on the cutting edge in our love of turquoise! I'm seeing it everywhere now and rightly so.

I’m Erin and I am obsessed with the color turquoise. I started this blog to collect inspirational photos I find of fabulous rooms that feature all of the lovely shades of my favorite color. For even more turquoise, visit my shopping blog Everything Turquoise!
